Flora municipality is situated at the coast of Sogn og Fjordane county, with a population of approx. 11 400 inhabitants. The municipality stretches from inner fjords where the mountains ascend to the glacier Ålfotbreen, to the outermost coast. Arriving here you find a cluster of islands where people still live, whilst working on mainland. The municipality is the perfect destination for nature experiences, boat life, sea rafting, fishing, angling and hunting.
In the municipality you will find the westernmost town in Norway, Florø. It was founded in 1860 on account of the expanding herring fisheries. Many consider herring, «the silver of the seas», to be the main reason why the town was founded and is today found in the town’s coat of arms.
Flora municipality has several times been elected as the municipality with the best prosperity in Norway.
You will find a great variety of cultural offers; school for performing arts, rock club, choirs, revues and brass bands. For those with other interests we have paint ball club, motor cross club, horseback riding club, rifle club, and so on. Located several places you also find football fields, tennis courts, sports hall, swimming hall, and to organize it all, numerous of sports and leisure organizations.
Every year, in June, the historical theatre play Kinnaspelet takes place on the island Kinn, a 30 minutes boat ride west of Florø. The rock carvings at Ausevik and the coastal museum in Florø give tourists and other visitors a historical perspective to this amazing municipality.
The town is today both a charming little community, and at the same time a town with busy industries, developing continuously.
Trade and industry in Flora is mainly fishing industry, shipyard, and supply for the oil and gas industry in the North Sea. The inhabitants of the municipality create values, which are several times higher than what is average for the country.
Flora offers a well-developed infrastructure. Communications by boat and bus internally in the municipality, and by bus, boat or plane to get further on. Several departures daily by plane to Oslo and by express boat or plane to Bergen make communication and trading easier.
